Charles de Gaulle’s former French Riviera home has hit the market for US$30 million.

Nestled in the town of Beaulieu-Sur-Mer on the Côte d’Azur, between Nice and Monaco, the historic nine-bedroom house was home to de Gaulle—the military officer, prime minister, and president of France—in 1945, according to listing agent Andrea Wohl Lucas of Douglas Elliman, which brought the property to the market in September.

During World War II, de Gaulle led Free French Forces against Nazi Germany and chaired the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946 in order to restore democracy in France. He was appointed prime minister in 1958 and president in 1959. He died in November 1970 at the age of 79.

Besides its history and notable former resident, the home is unusually large compared to its neighbors and has standout views of the surrounding mountains and Mediterranean Sea.

“Most homes in this area are 4,000 square feet to 5,000 square feet, with four or five bedrooms. This home is over 10,000 square feet with nine bedrooms and additional staff rooms,” Wohl Lucas said.

These days, nothing remains from de Gaulle’s tenure, with the estate having been fully renovated.

The owner, who Mansion Global couldn’t identify, “originally did a gut renovation in 2011, then renovated it further in 2018,” Wohl Lucas said. “The home needed everything.”

The work was all done according to protected landmark requirements, she added. Like plenty of other countries, France has specific regulations on construction and renovation in regards to historic buildings.

Now, the three-story estate spans 11,000 square feet of “absolute modernity,” according to the listing. There are sprawling living spaces, two state-of-the-art kitchens, a formal dining room, numerous terraces and an elevator.

The primary bedroom, meanwhile, “has spectacular unobstructed views of the sea and the mountains,” Wohl Lucas said. “It’s 900 square feet and has two dressing rooms and an enormous bathroom.”

Outside, the pool is surrounded by more than an acre of verdant gardens, and alongside the main house, there’s accommodation for a caretaker and several studios for guests or house staff.
